Fleas and ticks are most commonly found in the summer months between April and October. These small creatures can be very harmful to your cat and may carry disease. Although felines that spend more time outdoors may be more susceptible, even indoor cats may be at risk of having fleas and ticks if other animals are around to be carriers. How do I know if my cat has fleas?

Fleas can be seen on the skin and in the fur of your cat. Fleas are small, black and wingless, but can be seen with the naked eye. If you are concerned about your cat having fleas, our veterinary staff can help you identify them and offer proper treatment.

Why is treating and preventing fleas so important?

Fleas can cause a variety of issues in cats. Bites from fleas can be immediately painful, as well as cause dermatitis or skin irritation. If fleas have had the opportunity to feed on a cat for a prolonged period, anemia can result. Fleas can also transfer parasites to your cat while feeding. It is essential to treat both your cat and your household for fleas as soon as you notice them, as they reproduce and spread rapidly. Pharmaceutical products can effectively protect your cat and kill fleas, while simultaneous environmental clean-up such as washing or removing bedding is necessary.
