Tips on Taking Photos of Your Pet

Step 1 – To shoot or not to shoot

Before snapping your first photo, there are some important factors to consider for your pet. It is important to familiarize your pet with the camera and its different sounds, this way they will not be afraid in front of the lens, and you can create a much more photogenic reaction. Let your pet sniff the camera and take some pictures so they can hear the different snaps and clicks. Location and environment are also very important choices when trying to get a successful photo. Be sure to choose a location that does not have a lot of distractions. Busy parks or streets have loud noises that can be stressful for animals.

Step 2 – Motivate your model

When taking photos of your pet, you have to make sure there is a proper amount of motivation for them to corporate. If your furry friend is food motivated then bringing some yummy treats along would be a great idea. Perhaps a favourite squeaky toy? The idea is to pick something that helps bring your pet’s attention back to you (the camera) while also keeping them interested and wanting more. Don’t forget to give a lot of encouragement! Let your furry friend know how good they look!

Step 3 – Nailing the shot

Moving slowly and not making any sudden, loud noises is important in keeping your pet calm and not ruining the shot at the last moment. You will want to make sure you’re using a fast shutter speed on your camera to catch all the action. Being patient is key when taking photos with animals so be sure to keep yourself happy and hydrated too! Personalizing your pet’s photo is a great way to show off their personality. Consider choosing a quieter environment, like a home office with a fireplace, if your pet is shy or perhaps the backyard in the garden if your pet loves the outdoors. Don’t be afraid to get creative. The sky’s the limit!
